Assignment: Pick two or three sources from the end of Chapter 2 and follow them for six weeks, with weekly reports of helpful information. After a six week period of following blogs, make a decision as to if the sources were worth watching.

September 1-Kate Sheenhan
The blog discussed the reliability of reviews on Yelp.com. Recently Ms. Sheenhan was in a unfamiliar city and used the reviews from Yelp.com to determine a quality place to eat, but was sadly disappointed. She feels she has a lot of experience with sorting through online reviews and wonders if reviews are becoming like comments.
I had never heard of Yelp. I discovered it is a site that allows anyone to review numerous categories (hotels, restaurants, etc.) in numerous cities in the United States, plus Paris and London.
August 30-Jason Griffey
The blog discusses three events that have recently happened:
"Google bought Motorola Mobility"
"HP drops WebOS...and computers?"
"Steve Jobs resigns as CEO of Apple"
From these articles Mr. Griffey advises that a library's next Android device be Motorola, and warns that a library who currently use HP as their source of desktop systems will soon be looking elsewhere.

"Welcome to the ResourceShelf ResourceBlog where dedicated librarians and researchers share the results of their directed (and occasionally quirky) web searches for resources and information."
September 7:
From press release - "Free "Early Journal Content" from JSTOR"
JSTOR is allowing free access to journal content to anyone in the world for articles that were published before 1923 in the U.S. and before 1870 from anywhere else. This represents close to half a million articles from over 200 journals.
From PC World - "Google Voice Added to Archive Service"
Google now allows user of Google Voice to archive their data.
I had to do some research to understand this article since I have no experience with Google Voice or Google Takeout. "Google Takeout allows you to download a copy of your data stored within Google products"

I found the information about Motorola and HP the most interesting as the information may effect my own personal buying decisions in the future. I also learned a little bit about subjects in which I had no prior knowledge. Overall, the blogs were worth the time I spent in both reading them and trying to comprehend the knowledge in them.

I've used Yelp many times for restaurant reviews but it is difficult to rely on others opinions. There are always mixed reviews an only YOU can truly judge the food. I like this website for other reasons. I take a look at the customer's pictures provided, the menus posted, or links to a restaurant's website. You can see what kind of cuisine is in the area, what is most popular, and if you view the pictures that others post you can get a good idea of what the restaurant looks like and how the food is presented.
ReplyDeleteHello, Chris!
ReplyDeleteAs I can realize you are on the right path for this course. You already started monitoring your sources. I, as always, didn't vstarted it, only this week I got used with the blog creation, but my goal is start the assignment ASAP!
You wrote on my blog about your favorite season. I like the clors of fall too, they are vamazing. I have never seen it before (in Brazil we don't have the changing of the seasons, it's sun all over the year). Although, my favorite season is summer, because I feel free for goingf outside, wearing bright and short clothes, and I think that is the better tim eto go for trips (the number of luggage decrease a lot!)
I have a cousin who lives in Atlanta, Georgia, and I already went there. It is a warmer place than Indiana, but they have the changing of seasons, this I know because of my cousin's pictures. I wish you good lucky on your new address. Hope that you can enjoy there.
Hello, Chris. You are on the ball with getting started on the information sites that you are following. I have chosen the Library Success: A Best Practices Wiki site as one of my selections. It is going to be very informative and quite organized. I did examine the interface; though, have not delved as of yet. There are 14 catagories to being inquiry. I am with you on being new to YELP; though, I have heard of it. I guess I never refer to other people's opinions on restaurants too much; though, I eat out very little. When I do, I prefer familiar surroundings. I guess I have never viewed eating as an exploration. I rather view it much as Trick-or-Treating and would rather refrain. I think web surfing is much the same in some regards. Delicious is going to be a wonderful tool in taking out some of the scavenger hunt out of resource accessing. I also like that it connects people, which is where the term Social Media comes in.
